Caring for Your Waxed Canvas Gear: A Comprehensive Guide by Remote Projects

Your gear will wear in, not wear out—and with a little care, it'll go the distance, marked by the traces of your adventures.

Waxed canvas is a durable, water-resistant fabric that has been trusted for centuries to create outdoor gear that lasts. Like an oilskin coat, your Remote Projects gear is built to age beautifully with proper care.

THE BASICS: BRUSH, SHAKE, WIPE

Keep it simple. Your waxed canvas gear doesn't need complicated cleaning routines.

Remove dirt and debris: Use a brush or cloth with cold water to gently remove dirt, sand, or debris. No detergent needed—it strips the wax that keeps your gear water-resistant.

Let it dry naturally: Hang your gear in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight (it can melt the wax and fade the canvas).

Store it right: Keep it dry and aired out. Never pack it away damp—that's how mold starts.

SPOT CLEANING

For small stains: Gently dab with a damp cloth.

For tougher stains: Mix warm water with pure soap (avoid harsh detergents). Dab gently, then rinse with clean water to remove soap residue.

MOULD REMOVAL

If your gear has been stored damp:

  1. Brush off all visible surface mould
  2. Apply diluted vinegar to affected areas with a sponge
  3. Hand wash in warm water with pure soap
  4. Rinse thoroughly and air-dry away from direct sun
  5. Re-proof the cleaned areas once completely dry
RE-PROOFING YOUR GEAR

Your gear will tell you when it needs re-proofing—water will start beading less, and the canvas may look lighter in high-wear areas.

When to re-proof: Generally once a year, or when you notice decreased water resistance.

How to re-proof: Apply a thin, even layer of quality wax (we recommend our Platypus Wax) using a clean cloth or soft brush. Let it cure for 24 hours before use.

WHAT NOT TO DO
  • No machine washing or dry cleaning
  • No hot water or harsh detergents
  • No direct sunlight when drying
  • No ironing or starching
  • No plastic bags for long-term storage
THE REMOTE PROJECTS PHILOSOPHY

We bring back the good old practice of buying gear thoughtfully and looking after it—a real game-changer in today's throwaway world. It's about getting back to basics, cherishing our gear, and finding that deep connection with the outdoors that we've been missing.

Your gear is designed to wear in, not wear out. With proper care, it will carry the stories of your adventures for years to come.
